How to Choose the Perfect Photo for a Pet Portrait
Creating a beautiful pet portrait begins with choosing the right reference photo. A good photo allows me to capture your pet’s personality, expression and unique details as accurately as possible.
Here are a few simple tips to help you select the best image for your portrait.
Natural light works best
Photos taken in natural light are ideal. Soft daylight helps reveal the true colours of your pet’s fur and creates gentle shadows that add depth and character.
Try to avoid photos taken with flash, as this can flatten colours and create harsh reflections in the eyes.
A photo taken outdoors or near a window usually works perfectly.
Phone photos are absolutely fine
Professional photos are not necessary. Many of the portraits I create are based on photos taken with a mobile phone.
What matters most is that the image is:
clear and in focus
well lit
large enough to see your pet’s features
It is also always recommended to send multiple photos if possible. This allows me to better understand your pet’s colouring, expression and personality, and helps me create the most accurate and expressive portrait.
A calm, natural pose is ideal
Your pet doesn’t need to be perfectly posed. In fact, natural expressions often make the most beautiful portraits.
Photos where your dog is sitting, lying down or calmly looking towards the camera usually work very well. What matters most is that the eyes are visible and expressive.
I also recommend choosing photos that are taken at your pet’s eye level rather than from above, as this creates a more natural perspective and allows the expression to be captured more accurately in the portrait.
You can combine multiple photos
If you have several photos you love, it is often possible to combine them.
For example, one image might have the perfect expression, while another shows your pet’s colouring more accurately. Using multiple references can help create the most faithful portrait.
Part of my artistic process involves selecting the pose, expression and details that best capture your pet’s personality, so sending more than one photo is always very welcome.
The photos are used as reference material to understand your pet’s features, colouring and character. The final portrait is not a direct copy of a single photograph, but a carefully composed artwork created to capture the essence and personality of your pet.
If you're unsure which photo will work best, send a few of your favourites. I’m always happy to help select the image that will create the most beautiful and expressive portrait.
Choosing the right photo is the first step in creating a timeless artwork that celebrates your pet.
